About

OUR MISSION

Abortion Freedom Fund is a national abortion fund that helps pay for abortion pills by mail, while also supporting and uplifting all avenues of abortion care and access. Our goal is to amplify the work of local abortion funds and their communities as well as support abortion pill providers and individual abortion seekers. We support accessible, affordable, evidence-based abortion pills by mail for all. Our mission is to help pregnant people take control of their healthcare and futures by dismantling medicalized control of abortion and encouraging a world where abortion pills are available over-the-counter.

Because social inequities create health disparities and certain communities are more affected by abortion bans than others, we prioritize working with organizations committed to anti-racism and uplifting queer, disabled, and other historically and intentionally marginalized and excluded communities. Abortion can only be equitable if it is accessible to all!

We simplify access to care for patients by funding virtual abortion providers and clinics, individuals accessing abortion with pills, and reimbursing local abortion funds for telehealth abortion care, allowing them to focus their resources on people seeking in-person abortions in their communities. In the past, the search for abortion funding often included having to contact many different organizations before receiving their financial support. Our goal is that whether abortion seekers come directly to us, their local abortion fund, or their clinic for funding, that their funding process is simplified and streamlined.

In addition to direct funding, we partner with organizations doing research, informational campaigns, and other activism to increase access to abortions.

Christie Pitney

Christie Pitney (they/she) is one of the Abortion Freedom Fund co-founders and the midwife and founder of Forward Midwifery. They are also the clinician advisor for Plan C Pills, on the board of Pro-Choice Maryland, and volunteers for the Miscarriage and Abortion Hotline. Christie started Forward Midwifery when she was living in California and saw that folks in her area could not access in-person abortions due to multiple barriers and wanted to find a way to help increase access. They believe that abortion should be accessible to all people in all options - community based care, telehealth, and self-managed! Christie tries to ensure that their work is rooted in the tenets of Reproductive Justice and is also passionate about queer and trans healthcare, prison abolition, and food justice.

Julie Jenkins

Julie Jenkins (she/her) is a Sexual and Reproductive Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 15 years of clinical experience, including providing telehealth abortion care for multiple organizations. She is the former lead plaintiff in ACLU litigation challenging Maine’s physician-only abortion law, a co-founder of the Abortion Freedom Fund, and a strategist and training program manager for a national association of abortion providers. Julie received her doctorate in nursing practice from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and is an experienced educator, speaker, and trainer. She strongly believes in the right to abortion care at all levels—clinical, telehealth, and community care—as well as the right for all folks to have accurate, safe, and evidence-based access to all sexual and reproductive healthcare and health information.

Ruchi Kaul

Ruchi Kaul (she/her) is the physician and founder of Maitri Wellness, one of the first direct primary care practices in New Jersey. Prior to opening her practice, she taught full spectrum family medicine, including abortions, to family medicine residents. She is also a co-founder of the Abortion Freedom Fund and volunteers for the Miscarriage and Abortion Hotline. Ruchi was previously with Aid Access and was the third US-based clinician to join the organization (in July of 2020) as a way to open up avenues to access abortions in the pandemic. Ruchi integrates Western medicine with older traditions, such as Ayurveda and acupuncture, as well as coaching and transgender care, and strives to make that care affordable and accessible.
